Pre-schoolers and young children might experience different kinds of worries once the start of the school year rolls around, for instance, some might have a difficult time with separation and unfamiliarity, while others might be filled with social concerns – whether they’ll have nice teachers, or perhaps whether they’ll be able to get along with their peers.
So how is it we as parents can help ease the dreaded transition from holiday to homework?
Here are five ways:
1. Acknowledge the way your child feels
Encouraging our children to speak up about their fears and sincerely listening to them (instead of just dismissing them) can truly ease their burdens and help to alleviate their anxiety.
2. Create predictability and provide control
This can be done by creating, for instance, a regular bedtime routine just before the new school year begins, or by doing little things like helping to organise your child’s stationery and books, or even going through a regular morning routine together. This can create a sense of security and familiarity which can help to keep those back-to-school blues at bay.
3. Brainstorm solutions to your child’s worries
Discussing practical solutions to your child’s particular fears and concerns can allow them to feel much less anxious should anything go wrong.
4. Establish fun traditions
Creating fun traditions before and after school can make a child look forward to going to school! This can be as simple as talking about your child’s day at school and being interested in what they’ve learnt. They’ll be looking forward to going to school and telling you about it in no time!
5. Pave the way to positivity
When a child expresses his/her fears about school, express your confidence in your child’s ability to cope. Paving the way to positivity can change the mindset of our children.
Best of luck to your child in the new school year!
