What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
It’s an approach to learning that integrates these four subjects into a cohesive and engaging experience.
Think of it as a way of teaching that encourages children to explore the world around them through hands-on activities, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
Why is STEM important for preschoolers?
Even at a young age, children are naturally curious and inquisitive – traits that are at the heart of STEM learning.
Introducing STEM concepts in preschool helps children:
- Develop critical thinking skills: STEM activities encourage children to ask questions, investigate, and find solutions to problems.

How can I support my child's STEM learning at home?
You can encourage your child’s STEM learning at home by:
- Asking open-ended questions: Instead of asking “What color is this?”, ask “What do you notice about this?” or “What do you think will happen if…?”
- Encouraging exploration: Provide your child with opportunities to explore their environment and try new things.
- Providing simple materials: Blocks, building toys, art supplies, and even household items can be used for STEM activities.
- Making learning fun: Focus on making learning enjoyable and engaging. Don’t worry about getting the “right” answer; the process of exploration and discovery is what’s important.
We believe that every child is a natural scientist, engineer, and mathematician.
Q-dees’ STEM programme takes this a step further by fostering parent-child relationships as well!
Each term, every child receives a STEM Kit, filled with activities to do as the term progresses. Some of these activities will be done in class. Others will be done at home.
Take this opportunity to spend time with your child as you do the activity together. Ask them about their day and what they’ve learned. You’ll be surprised how much they have to say!
Is STEM just for "smart kids"?
Absolutely not!
STEM is for all children. It’s about nurturing their natural curiosity and developing essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, regardless of their future career path.
What does STEM learning look like in Q-dees?
Our STEM Programme is thematic based. This means that learning is based through story-telling, allowing children to immerse themselves in learning. This engages their attention and imagination, which studies have proven increases knowledge retention.
